Jason reflection

"Once a bitch, always a bitch, I say."
This quote reveals Jason's  way of telling things the way they appear. His straightforwardness also comes off as being extremely rude and bitter. His view on Miss Quentin reveals his vulgurness and hatred towards his family and also women in general. Jason chooses to blame his problems on others instead of realizing that he has faults of his own.

"What this country needs is white labor. Let these dam trifling niggers starve for a couple of years, then they’d see what a soft thing they have."
Jason holds prejudice against blacks and Jews. He holds hatred and bitterness towards everybody. Betweeen these quotes it is revealed to us that Jason's character doesn't fluctuate or change a lot over time. He remains the same mean and bitter person throughout the entire story.

Quentin Reflection

Throughout the beginning of the story, Quentin is portrayed as an over achiever, who tries to live up to extremely high expectations for himself. He is an extreme rule follower, which ends up being his downfall. His family used to have a lot of success and Quentin tries to resurrect their success. Towards the end of the chapter, Quentin's thoughts become extremely jumbled and restless. Aside from these traits, Quentin is obsessed with his sister, Caddy. Unlike his brother's lustful relationship with Caddy,  Quentin is extremely protective over his sister and her actions. He tries to preserve her sense of perfection because she his the only thing left in their family that meets the high expectations that Quentin holds.
"is Benjy still crying I don't know poor Benjy I sat down on the bank the grass was damp a little then I found my shoes wet get out of that water are you crazy but she didn't move her face was a wide blur framed out of the blur of the sand by her hair get out now she sat up the she rose her skirt flopped against  her draining she climbed the the bank her clothe flopping sat down why don't you wring it out do ou want to catch cold yes the water sucked and gurgled across the shallow the water rippled like a piece of cloth  holding still a little light as water does"
In this passage, spoken by Quentin, there is an extreme lack of punctuation and sense. Quentin is extremely confused and his thoughts are in completely jumbled and in disarray. The lack of punctuation portrays this jumbled state of mind. The passage is spoken in the present. This passage also is an example of how obsessive and hyper focused Quentin is, which is his ultimate downfall.

sound and fury questions

1. Benji is the only one that can see the approaching destruction of the compsons. Although he can't fully comprehend what this chaos means, he grasps a completely different perspective on his family and his family's future. He can sense their downfall.
2.Benjy relies on his childhood memories and feelings of nostalgia because they were times of happiness and they were much more carefree. His disability was also accepted when he was a child because his siblings were also young and immature, but now as a full grown adult his disabilities only put much more stress on his family.
3.Benjy is symbolic of all of his family’s failures and all of the burdens that are put upon the family. He didn't choose his fate, much like how the compsons didn't choose to fail.

The Benjy Reflection

This week, we began reading The Sound and The Fury, by William Faulkner. The first chapter is an introduction to the rest of the book and the main character, Benjy. Benjy is a severely mentally challenged 33 year old man. Benjy is viewed as a helpless person who needs aid in everything he does, but in reality,  Benjy is the only one who can truly see the truth in his family's situation.  He can predict the downfall of his family but can't fully communicate it to the rest of his family. He can see visuals and images of the failure of his family.
